Welcome to the Philadelphia Center for Minimally Invasive
Knee Surgery
My staff and I welcome you to my practice, which is now
dedicated exclusively to the care of disorders of the
knee. We look forward to meeting you and guiding you as
you embark on the experience of knee replacement surgery. As Director of the Philadelphia Center for Minimally
Invasive Knee Surgery, I invite you to explore the
treatment alternatives for your knee arthritis. In
addition to educational content, this site also contains
forms for you to fill out before your initial and
follow-up visits with my associates and me, directions to
our offices, physical therapy protocols, instructions
regarding what you should do before and after surgery, and
a library of my publications, which may give you
additional insight into your condition or experience. At
the Center, we place an emphasis on providing highly
personalized and compassionate care, and offer
state-of-the-art minimally invasive techniques of total
and partial knee replacement surgery. Presumably, most of
you are coming for evaluation of your arthritic knee
having already tried general non-operative treatments,
including activity modifications, medication, injections,
physical therapy, and perhaps weight loss. These
interventions will be discussed further with you.
Baby boomers, long fearful of surgical treatment of their
painful and arthritic knees, and reluctant to pursue
surgery because it would mean time out of work or away
from their families, now have alternatives which make knee
replacement surgery more feasible and palatable for them.
Each year, millions of people are diagnosed with arthritis
of the knee. While the majority of arthritis sufferers can
be managed successfully without surgery, each year
approximately 1 million people around the world have knee
replacement surgery, and that number is expected to triple
over the next 25 years. In my practice, nearly 90% of
patients undergoing total knee replacement surgery are
candidates for a minimally invasive surgical approach.
Additionally, approximately 10-20% of patients who come to
us for knee replacement surgery are candidates for more
conservative partial knee resurfacing procedures -
unicompartmental, patellofemoral, or bicompartmental knee
resurfacing - and each of these is performed with
minimally invasive techniques. Given the increasingly
complex lifestyle demands of our patients and a pervasive
interest in quicker recovery of independent and active
living, the minimally invasive approach to both total and
partial knee replacement is attractive to patients who
have come to me from around the world. I am proud and
honored that you are allowing my team and me at the Center
the privilege of caring for you. I believe
wholeheartedly in the sage comment by the world-renowned
cardiac surgeon, Michael Debakey, M.D., who said “You’re
only as good as your surgical team.” I value the
professionalism, intelligence, commitment, and strong
sense of values of my staff at the Philadelphia Center for
Minimally Invasive Knee Surgery and 3B Orthopaedics.
Together we work as a close-knit team to ensure that your
questions are answered and that you are provided with the
highest level of compassionate quality care. We work
intimately with the hospital nurses, physical therapists,
social workers, discharge planners, and administration to
meet the needs of our patients. Contemplating
surgery can be a frightening experience for patients. It
is our philosophy at the Philadelphia Center for Minimally
Invasive Knee Surgery to spend adequate time with you so
that you understand the potential risks and benefits of
surgery and alternative treatment options, have
appropriate expectations for the postoperative period, and
are empowered in the decision process and engaged in the
experience. It is our intention that this website and your
personal visit with us will make your knee replacement
experience as informative and pleasant as possible.
